History of AIMIM

AIMIM has its roots in Hyderabad, where it was founded in 1927 as a pro-Nizam party by Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan Qiledar under the guidance of Ulma-e-Mashaeqeen. Initially known as MIM (Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen), the party organized its first meeting in Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan’s house on 12th November of that year.

The party was formed in response to the perceived neglect of the Muslim community in India and aimed to advocate against this marginalization. In 1938, Bahadur Yar Jung was elected as the party’s president and his manifesto focused on religion and culture. However, after Jung’s death, Qasim Rizvi became the new president of MIM in 1944.

In 1948, the Razakars, an Islamist Parliamentary Organization led by Kasim Razvi, merged with MIM and demanded a separate Muslim country called South Pakistan. The Razakar soldiers even marched to fight against the Indian government for the establishment of South Pakistan. This led to the Indian government launching Operation Polo in September 1948, resulting in the encroachment of Hyderabad by the Indian Army and making it a part of India.

As a result of this revolt, MIM was prohibited from all political activities, including conducting rallies, delivering speeches in public, mass gatherings, and participating in elections. Qasim Rizvi was imprisoned from 1948 to 1957 and declared a traitor. He was later released on the condition that he permanently leave India and hand over all his political authority to Abdul Wahed Owaisi, a lawyer. Owaisi renamed the party as AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) and became its president.

In the 2014 Telangana Legislative Assembly election, the party earned recognition as a state party by securing seven seats.
