The Indian Foreign Service was established in 1946, shortly before India gained independence from British rule. IFS officers are recruited through the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and undergo rigorous training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. Once they complete their training, they are posted to various Indian Embassies and Consulates around the world, where they represent India’s interests and work towards strengthening diplomatic relations with other countries.

The responsibilities of IFS officers include promoting Indian trade and investment abroad, assisting Indian nationals living or travelling abroad, and providing assistance to foreign nationals visiting India. Eligibility Criteria for IFS

The eligibility criteria for the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) are as follows:

Nationality Criteria:

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India, Nepal, or Bhutan.
  • The candidate can be a Tibetan refugee who came to India for permanent settlement before 1 January 1962.
  • The candidate can be a migrant from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Uganda, the East African countries of Kenya, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zaire, Malawi, Ethiopia, or Vietnam for permanent settlement in India.

Educational Qualification:

  • The candidate should have a degree of graduation or a degree which is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from any recognized university.

Age Limit:

  • The minimum age is 21 years and the maximum age is 32 years as per the UPSC CSE notification.
  • SC/ST candidates have an age relaxation of up to 37 years and there is no limit on the number of attempts.
  • OBC candidates have an age relaxation of up to 35 years.
  • The age limit is different for residents from J&K, physically handicapped, and Defence candidates.

Number of Attempts:

  • The general and EWS category candidates have 6 attempts.
  • SC/ST candidates have no limit on the number of attempts till the age of 37 years.
  • OBC candidates have a total of 9 attempts.

Age Relaxation:

  • SC/ST candidates have a relaxation of 5 years.
  • OBC candidates have a relaxation of 3 years.
  • Deaf, Blind, and disabled people can get a relaxation of up to a maximum of 10 years.

Exam Structure & Format

Different Stages of the IFS Exam

The IFS exam is conducted in three phases- Preliminary exam, Main exam and Personality test. Candidates must qualify for each stage to move to the next stage.

IFS Prelims Exam Structure & Format

The IFS preliminary exam consists of two papers – General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (also known as Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT). Both the question papers are objective type and consist of multiple choice questions. The duration of each paper is two hours.

Structure and Format of IFS Mains Exam

The IFS Mains exam consists of nine papers, including two optional papers. The first two papers are language papers, English and one Indian language, and the remaining four papers are General Studies-I, General Studies-II, General Studies-III, General Studies-IV and optional papers I and II and an essay. All papers except the optional paper are subjective and require essay-type answers. The duration of each paper is three hours.

IFS Personality Test Structure and Format

The personality Test is the last stage of the IFS Exam. The test is conducted by a panel of experts and evaluates the candidate’s overall personality, leadership qualities, communication skills and knowledge of current affairs. The test carries a weightage of 275 marks.

The General Studies paper includes Indian Heritage and Culture, Governance, International Relations, Technology and Economic Development and Environmental Ecology. Optional question papers test the candidate’s knowledge of subjects such as botany, chemistry, agriculture, forestry, geology, mathematics, physics, zoology and statistics.

Salary Structure of IFS

The pay structure of an Indian Foreign Service (IFS Full Form) officer is determined by the Central Government and is based on the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission.

As of 2023, the starting salary of an IFS officer is Rs. 60,000 per month at the Junior Time Scale level. Salary increases with the promotion and seniority of the officer.

The pay scale for various levels of IFS officers is as follows:

  2. Senior Time Scale: Rs 15,600 –39,100 INR
  3. Junior Administrative Grade: Rs 15,600 –39,100 INR

Apart from the basic pay, IFS officers are also entitled to various allowances such as Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Traveling Allowance.
